How Imperial shortlists

Imperial requires the UCAT (it replaced the BMAT from 2025 entry). Shortlisting for interview has relied heavily on UCAT score plus meeting the academic requirements, which are typically A*AA including Biology and Chemistry. In practice, a strong UCAT is the biggest single factor in getting an Imperial interview.

UCAT scores reach universities in the autumn, and Imperial sends interview invitations on a rolling basis, usually from December.

The Imperial MMI

Imperial uses a multiple mini interview (MMI) format: several short stations, each marked separately. In recent cycles it has been held online, with some parts pre-recorded. Stations assess things like:

  • Motivation for medicine and insight into the job
  • Ethical reasoning and professional values
  • Communication and empathy
  • Teamwork, resilience, and how you reflect on your own experiences

Marks usually reward both what you say and how you say it, so fluent, well-structured communication matters as much as having the "right" idea.

Have a real answer ready. Imperial's course is known for a strong scientific grounding, including an integrated BSc year, and for clinical placements across major London hospitals. Link whatever draws you to something you've actually done or read — not something you copied from the prospectus.

Frequently asked questions

Does Imperial still use the BMAT?
No. The BMAT was discontinued, and Imperial has required the UCAT since 2025 entry.
What UCAT score do I need for Imperial?
There's no fixed published cut-off that stays the same each year — it depends on the applicant pool. Historically, Imperial has shortlisted applicants with high UCAT scores relative to the national average, so it's worth planning your four choices around your actual result.
Is the Imperial interview online?
In recent cycles it has been online. Formats can change, so check the details in your invitation and on Imperial's website.
Are you an official Imperial admissions representative?
